Conversations with Designer Nicolette Wong: Crafting Harmony Tapestry — A SG60 Tribute to Singapore

At Qua, transforming artists’ work in various mediums into lacquerware has been a key focus of some of our most recent collections. Our latest collection, Harmony Tapestry, is a tribute to Singapore’s 60th birthday this 2025, designed in collaboration with local budding designer Nicolette Wong.

The intricate motif reflects the rich cultural tapestry that defines our nation, drawing inspiration from the diverse ethnic groups that have shaped Singapore.

Honouring Our Shared Heritage

Each carefully selected design element embodies our shared heritage — The grace of the Peony (Chinese), the elegance of the Batik (Malay), the intricacy of Buttis (Indian), and the charm of Portuguese influences (Eurasian).

Singapore’s Vibrant Cultural Tapestry, Beautifully Reflected

Buttis (Indian Craftsmanship): Tiny teardrop or paisley “butti” motifs — rooted in Mughal and South Indian textile arts — bring a rhythmic dance of curves and dots to fabrics and décor, honoring the Indian community’s centuries‑old traditions of detailed embroidery and block‑printing.

Peony Blossoms (Chinese Heritage): A symbol of prosperity, honour, and beauty in Chinese culture, the lush peony motif graces everything from lacquer trays to wall art — celebrating the community’s deep love for floral symbolism and auspicious imagery.

Batik Patterns (Malay Tradition): Hand‑stamped or printed with stylised leaves, flowers, and geometric shapes, batik textiles pay homage to Malay artisanship. The organic “wax‑resist” designs lend an air of tropical elegance to textiles, cushions, and table linens.

Portuguese Tiles (Eurasian Legacy): Also known as “azulejos,” these hand‑painted ceramic tiles capture the Eurasian community’s Portuguese ancestry. Their intricate blue‑and‑white patterns or colorful motifs brighten walls, tabletops, and planters, weaving in a sense of Old World charm.

Together, these elements form a living mosaic that celebrates the rich, interwoven heritage of Singapore.

Designed in Singapore, Handmade by Artisans

Made to elevate everyday moments with elegance, the Harmony Tapestry Collection features an intricate laser-cut charm inspired by the four main ethnicities in Singapore and a series of quality handcrafted lacquerware embedded with the same motif.

"I hope the collection brings out a sense of quiet pride — the kind that comes from recognising small, familiar details that reflect who we are."

— Designer, Nicolette Wong

Here, Nicolette shares with us about her thoughts as a young designer in Singapore and more about her experience developing this collection together with Qua.

1) What first drew you to design, and how did growing up in Singapore shape your creative path?

I've always been drawn to design because of how it brings ideas to life in tangible, meaningful ways. Growing up in Singapore, I was constantly surrounded by a blend of cultures, architecture, and traditions — especially through my Peranakan heritage — which made me appreciate the beauty of detail, storytelling, and craftsmanship from a young age.

2) As an emerging designer here, what unique challenges do you face in Singapore’s market — and what opportunities excite you most?

The design landscape in Singapore is still small, and it can be hard to carve out a sustainable path — especially with limited resources and a high cost of living. But I'm excited by emerging opportunities in research and development, where design can be more than just aesthetics — it can drive real innovation and impact.

3) Looking back on developing the Harmony Tapestry Collection together with Qua, can you share a pivotal breakthrough or challenge that taught you the most about design?

One breakthrough moment was realising how much emotion and memory can be carried through pattern and motif — especially when you're working with symbols that people deeply connect with. The biggest challenge was balancing respect for tradition with the need to create something fresh and modern, and that process really deepened my understanding of design as both storytelling and problem-solving.

4) What feelings or memories do you hope this collection will stir in Singaporeans — whether it’s nostalgia, pride or a renewed appreciation for our nation’s rich heritage?

I hope the collection brings out a sense of quiet pride — the kind that comes from recognising small, familiar details that reflect who we are. Whether it's the warmth of family meals, neighbourhood landmarks, or everyday traditions, I want the designs to remind Singaporeans of what makes our shared identity so special.

5) Having collaborated on this meaningful tribute for Singapore’s 60th Birthday, what new perspectives or ambitions will you carry into your next designs — both for Singapore and beyond?

This project has made me more intentional about designing with meaning — not just aesthetics. Moving forward, I want to keep exploring how local stories and personal histories can be translated into design, whether it's through objects, spaces, or experiences, both in Singapore and on a global stage.

Since its debut, the Harmony Tapestry Collection has been a well-loved choice for B2B gifting. We are grateful for the continued trust and deeply heartened by the support for local brands and designers.
